Three generations under one roof
3 months in isolation and we managed to book a flight for my Mum to return back home. I’ve got mixed feelings about it - I am mainly worried about the time spent in the airport and during the flight surrounded by people. A bit sad because the girls, mostly Emma keeps saying she doesn’t want her to go, so she’ll be quite disappointed for a while. But knowing Emma, she’ll quickly get over it. Relieved - because we really needed to get back to being us four and get back to our normal (haha!) life.
It can be tricky to live with our parents. There are expectations on both sides, and not all the time these are being met. And when this extends over a long period of time, it becomes even more difficult. There may be choices we make and our parents don't agree to, just because they've lived different, they are just a different generation.
I believe the generation gap deepens when it comes to parenting styles and it’s very difficult to view the comments as constructive. It may be a Romanian mentality thing, but adjusting to our parenting style has not been very smooth for our parents. There's been much disagreeing but luckily me and Dan teamed up and there wasn't much chance for anyone to interfere. Many couples in Romania are not as lucky, and very often a young mother's actions will be strongly influenced by a 'know it all' grandmother who will decide that the mother should stop breastfeeding after 3 months, or who will know better than anyone why the baby is crying, guided by an old parenting book. Note to self: when my children have their old children, let them raise them as they will find apropriate. Their choices and actions will reflect that I have made my job right as a parent when they were young.
It hasn’t been too bad though and I think I could easily survive in war areas due to infinite patience and even better diplomatic skills that I’ve developed during these last months.
I am grateful though for these 3 months, because I’ve been so lucky not to worry too much about lunches, dishwasher, girls playing in the garden while we’d both be working. I could also go out for a run whenever I wanted, or take Ariana for a bike ride for some 1:1 time. On Sundays I could also have a lie in, so clearly I’ve been quite spoiled. But everything comes with a price. 😂😅
